Hi its proberbly late in the day but on the link below there is some imformation on your problem with central locking, the answer from danielg 4455 looks intresting.
i I have a problem with my central locking using the remote control in the key. some times it will open other times I have to do it several times before it will open. It's an 02 2lt five door. I have changed the battery.

You could try re-programming it using the info in the link below, but it sounds more like an intermittant fault with the remote fob. (eg, dry solder joint, or faulty switch)

As DD says, it could be some sort of intermittant fault with the key; I would have thought that, if it were a programming fault, then it would not work at all.
The battery in SWMBO's 52 Focus key-fob started losing power after about 4 years, but the replacement (poorer quality?) battery seems to be dwindling (i.e. losing range and sometimes appearing not to work) much quicker. I would venture that your problem could be related to the battery/battery contact.

I had similar problem wth my Focus.
I changed the battery and found it did nothing.
I told a chap at work and he said its a common problem on FORDS.
Its a case of built up static in the remote control box in the car.
Follow below
Look under the drivers side dashboard.
Under there attached on the right hand side right is a box which should say SIEMENS.
This is the remote control signal box.
Remove the cables attached to it and leave it for approx 1hr.
Go back to the car after an hour and put the cables back in.
Its an easy job and you cant go wrong.
It will work straight away.
Mines been fine and works perfect since
