I went for an interview yesterday for a position as a maintenence electrician. The hours were 06:00 - 16:00, 5 days a week, 1 hour lunch.. so 45 hours..
they asked me what kind of salary I was after and I told them £400/week.
the employment coach that sent me called this morning to see how I got on and I told them I tought it was ok..
she called back about an hour later after contacting the company for an update and told me that they thought I asked for too much money.. the last guy they had on as a maintenence sparky was on £250/week...
they said they thought that was a fair rate as they would be paying for my training as well.. even though I am 33 and a fully qualified sparky, not needing any training.....
so that's about £5.56.hour for a fully qualified sparky..?
I think they're deluding themselves to think that someone will work for that..
isn't the NMW £5.80 now anyway?

Dingbat, i think £60k is a little excessive for a maintenance job like that, dont you? Its not self employed work where you have to provide your own van, insurance, tools etc etc.

Likewise £13k they are offering is a joke, the right amount is somewhere between those two.

NMW is £5.80/hour, so at £250 for a 45 hour week they are breaking the law.

Even the lowest grade JIB rate (trainee or labourer) is 9.89 per hour, or £445 for a 45 hour week.

I never suggested that. I intended to imply that £250 was nowhere near a reasonable rate for a long week's work with relatively early starts.

Maybe the reference to dropping me sarnie was a tad too subtle. This time I'll use a smiley! :D

It's not easy being an employer or employee right now. Somebody will take it at £250 per week and then that will become the market rate for now. With recent employment on his cv, that person will also be in a better position to benefit from a higher market rate when/if the economy picks up.

But £13K a year for a qualified Electrician is taking the pi22 a little, especially for hours above and beyond a standard working week :(

So don't take the job and wait for somebody to pay you what you think you are worth. In either event one person stays on the dole and one person comes off.

For comparison my flat annual salary is just over £27k as a maintenance person. That is before any allowances.

Which is more like it.

I know the current economic climate will dictate wage rate with some employers taking advantage of the situation but I can't see how an experienced and qualified electrician can be worth any less than £22K

I get JIB rates and think I'm hard done by sometimes.

I take home £20,800, What ColJack asked for. And Im not a spark (most of you know what I do). And only do 39 hours a week.

It is an insult to skilled workers to offer £250/week.
