Fluke locator

Hello again. Have been on the lookout for a decent cable locator. I'm not a qualified spark but am dead keen. All the ones I have bought off the shelf seem to be a pile of ****, then I found this:

Trouble is its about 400 quid! Can anyone reccomend something in between ??

Nope. But i have a feeling that i'm about to own one....!

I think you would get more use from a decent multimeter as you will be able to:-

Measure AC/DC voltage
Measure AC/DC current
Measure continuity of conductors
Check resistors/diodes

Some additonal features on certain models :-

Temperature
Capacitance
Transistor gain
Frequency

All useful depending on your line of work/interest and available for quite a bit less than £400

Sounds cool, i shall investigate and invest.

would still like a decent cable / pipe locator though, want to suss out the wiring in my prehistoric house... will eventually re-wire. Just a handy tool to have.

Does such a thing exist for about a wunna?

If you want a semi decent detector you could check out the Bosch DMF 10 http://ukptocs.bosch-pt.com/boptocs...2FF203?division=gw&ccat_id=81943&prod_id=9442 which is about 70 squids.

I've found it quite good at locating cables at a reasonable depth, and much better than the cheapo ones I tried first.

The Fluke one is a much more sophisticated option in that it sends a signal down the cable which it detects.

Buying something like the Bosch would leave some money for a decent multimeter, which is definitely a good investment if you are going to start investigating electrics.
