Thanks for all your comments/advice. Gives me plenty to think about. We've got a CORGI man coming over tomorrow, so I will ask if he can give me quotes for the repair of the backboiler and for installation of a combi-boiler, and then see which one is the best option. I'm still in two...

ArtfulBodger, Thanks for your reply. Airing cupboard would be better as it gives much easier acces. We have a very shallow loft with a tiny access hole, so I think it will be very fiddly to fit. The airing cupboard is right under the loft and since the the loft is shallow, I guess it may not...
