I bought some teak garden furniture and they told me NOT to oil it as this would trap moisture in the wood and lead to rot. Leave it untreated and it will weather to a very pale finish. It's been a year now & so far, so good. Would this not also be the case for this application?

Definitely adware. :( I find that a combination of SpyBot (Search & Destroy) and Ad-Aware does the trick although if you've already got a problem they won't necessarily be able to remove it for you. At the very least they'll tell you exactly what you're dealing with & you can work from there.
