Bought a Fluidmaster valve at Toolstation (just over £10), examined to make certain how it fitted together, forced out the old valve (clockwise, not anti-clockwise), replaced with new, tested, it worked. 10 minutes tops, no plumber.

I'm sorry that I do not appear to be making myself very clear. The problem I have is that water is constantly running into the pan from the cistern. This is the problem that first kicked off this thread so I am just trying to pick up all the relevant information from here without starting all...
