Potterton Prima 40f boiler which does not ignite

The change to solid caps in motherboards was a welcome one :) In this case, housing the board next to that nice hot boiler probably doesn't help any..

Potterton Prima 40f boiler which does not ignite

I forgot to update this but basically: It was the control board at fault. Turns out that these boards contain three problematic capacitors which, over time, start playing up. Replacing them (for next to nothing) fixed the fault perfectly and it's run well ever since.

1993 is the board design date :)

Fixed! Or so it seems. In the end I decided to take a look at the main logic board PCB - three caps replaced later and i now have heat and hot water. Thank you all for your insight but it turned out to be the crappy (and I mean crap - this board is positively stoneage electronics) PCB...

Reliably? I'd say what's happening now (on just HW) is that it very slowly heats the tank (because it's intermittantly running the main burner) which means it will do it, but it will also take quite a while. I can't empirically confirm that but i've shutdown the CH for the time being and i'm...

Thanks folks all good stuff - i've checked the voltage to GV2 and it's definitely OK which I guess means the valve is sticking rather than PCB fault as suggested. Sort of makes sense given the pilot stays on (and pump, and fan) :) Time for an engineer and a new part! Will let you know how...

If I put just the HW on then one of these things will happen: A) pilot ignition fires, pilot lights, remains on, clunk for main burner but nothing happens then after. B) pilot ignition fires, pilot lights, remains on, clunk for main burner and main burner fires and stays on for x minutes...

OK burner came back on for a bit in the interim just FYI - now back off again. To answer your questions: I did bleed two radiators - both upstairs - the bathroom one always has air in it when they need bleeding but I didn't find air in either. Water quality looks OK - not drinkable but...

I've just restarted the boiler (again) on just HW and this time.. it fired up. It kept going for 3.5mins exactly and then went back to pilot light only.. Exciting stuff!

Got home to find the pilot light on, no sparking btw, and the main burner out. I believe i've got water flow, upped the pump to position 3 to make sure (was on 2) and i've also checked the expansion feeder tank in the loft to make sure there's water in it (there is and the inlet pipe is sitting...

Small update: engineer called and told me to check circulation and also the expansion tank in the loft to see if water is going into the system.. Going to check this when I get home (along with other suggestions) and give him a ring back in the morning.

You can view the manual for this boiler here: http://www.partsarena.co.uk/baxi/System/DATA/Dx/DS1/installation/2072/I01-2072/I01-2072.htm Re-reading it myself! EDIT: the fault finding chart seems to suggest the pilot remains lit?

It stays on (but I can't see any sparking or hear it either which probably means it knows the pilot is lit). I presume that if it's meaning to shut down the mainburner the pilot should also go out until a relight is necessary?

 Now that made me chuckle!
