    MDF Primer?

Thanks Pete. I was building this built-in in kids room. Since I happen to notice some threads on fumes, I thought I'd better do more research. I think, now, I feel comfortable that there isn't any risk of a health hazard from using MDF as furniture material. Thanks taffy for the replies.

    MDF Primer?

It doesn't seem to an issue that has a lot of attention in my neck of the woods. I've asked several different DIY stores paint specialists about "MDF Primer" and even about the "fumes" issue, and the seem not too concerned - as if they've never really heard about it. Yet, in this website...

    MDF Primer?

When I do a search for "MDF Primer" on Google, most, if not all, web sites in the hits are from UK or Australia. Is the use of MDF in the UK, Australia, and the like, more prominent than in the US?? None of the major paint/primer manufacturers (such as Behr, Glidden, Kilz, etc) I'm use to in...

    MDF Primer?

What exactly is an MDF primer? I've been doing some research on how to best paint MDF (I'm building a built-in cabinet). In terms of priming, I seen this term floated around in several areas - "use an MDF primer". But going to my local DIY store, I see nothing in the shelves that call out...

    Cutting large boards

I don't know how much 250 pounds can buy, but seems equivalent to more than $300 in the US, which around here can by a fairly decent table saw. I'm no proffesional (a novice, really), so take this for what its worth... I've used a nice aluminum straight-edge and a circular saw in the past...

    How to Paint MDF

Well woody, the results are in..... I built a small replica of a my cabinet. I used only MDF and even ripped 1x2s to make for the fascia. Obviously, I has a lot of exposed MDF edges. On one-third of the unit, I used PVA glue to seal the edges. On one-third on the unit, I used wood filler...

    Dumb Question...

Thanks for all the interesting replies. I'm glad I asked. In the future, any tips I get suggesting to use PVA glue, I'll assume Elmers Glue-All is well to do. I did a little more research on Elmers website and found their MSDS sheet on their products. It does say, for most of their wood...

    Dumb Question...

Forgive me...I'm a complete novice. When people are refering to PVA glue, is that plain white glue?

    How to Paint MDF

I think you're right about the drywall technique - I hadn't thought about it like that. i think I won't even try that at all. I hadn't thought about using a bead, but will in areas that might be useful. Anyhow, thanks for all the tips. What I think I will do is build a small box out of...

    How to Paint MDF

Thanks woody. I read somewhere else about a technique in finishing exposed edges of MDF. They suggested using drywall topping or decorative caulk and spreading it over the edge. Sand afterwards and you get a smooth edge that won't soak up paint or primer. Do you have any comments on this...

    How to Paint MDF

I'm going to construct a built-in cabinet in my guest bedroom. Since I was going to paint the cabinets, I was thinking of using MDF for the primary construction material to save on costs. Also after examining my Armoire that I bought from Pottery Barn, it appears it's made from MDF also...
