Replacement of Gravity backboiler system -best way to go?

Guys, just to say a big Thank You for your advice on this topic. After due consideration - am going conventional boiler / S plan route as against a Combi. May the grips on your tools always be solid :D Regards Dig

Great Gas CH Information / wiring diagram site

Thanks Corgiman, That is part of the problem though - from looking at the previous owner's usage, plus mine over the last 6 weeks (we've kept the same supplier), our CH and HW bill is looking at £400 - £480 pa. So, even with a let's say 50% more efficient system...

Replacement of Gravity backboiler system -best way to go?

Paul, Thanks for your very candid answer - much appreciated. Yep - you and yours gotta eat - which is why we all do what w egotta do, I suppose... ....you're right about the combi issue though the for and agianst camps seem pretty much even. When talking to...

Great Gas CH Information / wiring diagram site

Sorry chaps - thought it might be of use  As a non-specialist, I did learn something about my Gravity system's Wiring system though. When you realise that the room / cyl stats are effectively wired as a two way switch for the CH side, and some failure in this wiring probably...

Replacement of Gravity backboiler system -best way to go?

Paul, why will combis cost much more in the future against stored-water system boilers please? Thanks in advance, Dig

Replacement of Gravity backboiler system -best way to go?

Many thanks to Chris for posting the link to the Combimate product doumentation. Interesting comment on the Secondary effect of coating pipes with a "non-residual microscopic protective coating". I know its probably semantics, but if its non-residual, surely it ain't gonna be protecting for...

Hot water thermostat needs fitting, gravity fed back boiler.

Well, as you can see from the diagram, fitting a room stat after the programmer would seem an immediate improvement and is a very easy / cheap DIY job (£14 or thereabouts) and must help with economy / comfort levels. Installing a cylinder stat would seem like a very good idea too when linked...

Replacement of Gravity backboiler system -best way to go?

Paul, Again, many thanks. BTW, what is a magnaclean and combimate please? What are your replenish times with this sytem's HW if you run out and how do economics compare against a combi as you're keeping a large tank of HW always hot? Finally, could your suggested...

Great Gas CH Information / wiring diagram site

Just to give something back to the group - this site is a wealth of info and has a great set of wiring diags for the various CH Plans: http://www.gasman.fsbusiness.co.uk/index.htm I hope this proves of use to some of you - and thanks again for all the kind advice on this site. Regards...

Hot water thermostat needs fitting, gravity fed back boiler.

Well, there is no doubt that fully pumping is more efficient, however I have calculated that it will take a number of years at least to pay back the repiping costs before you start saving if you have a contractor do it. If cost is an issue, the zone valve would thus be the way to go I suppose...

Replacement of Gravity backboiler system -best way to go?

Wow, now you've got me worried! When I challenged him on the ponts system, he stated that he can justify a sufficient number of points and is thus not fiddling (he acted a bit insulted actually) -hmmmmmn. He stated that all the Fitters he knows fit condensing because they have to, but fit...

Hot water thermostat needs fitting, gravity fed back boiler.

I came across this excellent site with a fantastic diagram describing how the two types of stat wiring works: http://www.gasman.fsbusiness.co.uk/gravity_hot_water_pumped_heating.htm As you can see, its simpler than you thought! However, I have a Gravity system (see previous post) in need of...

Replacement of Gravity backboiler system -best way to go?

Many thanks for the replies. I realise that fitting the combi option means prob a lot less work for him, but he has mentioned that the existing elderly pipe work prob will not take the pressure of a direct system (although OK for a Combi) - does this sound right? Am a bit concerned about...

Replacement of Gravity backboiler system -best way to go?

I have a late 60's end of terrace 4 bed / 1 bath house with a Gloworm 56F backboiler Gravity feeding an elderly smallish HW tank (no diverter valve), 10 rads via an underfloor pump. It has 3 HW taps (the bath one with a feed to an old Showerforce 2000 power shower) and 4 CW taps. According to...

Old Gravity back boiler - weird problem - please help!

"Anti-Gravity" sounds very science fiction to me :D Seriously though, from the kind replies I've had in this thread, might it be better to renovate the existing system, using this idea, clean through the rads, upgrade the Immersion tank and make the system fully pumped with a 3 way...
