Very strange symptom - firebird boiler Reillo burner just blowing

Hi oil head thanks for getting back. There is no rubber o ring nor is there one on the schematic on the Firebird manual. It is a simple rebate producing a metal to metal seal. I think John,s burner is the same. M

Final thing, thanks for the info about the burner flange. The seal still seems to be working but even if it was leaking a bit it would not be as poor a seal as the one between the burner itself and this flange as the single top bolt fixing does not make a good airtight seal at the bottom as...

Hi All, well whoever had their money on the coil breaking down when hot was spot on. A new photo cell did nothing, but changing the coil sorted the issue. My many thanks to all who contributed including John, Oilhead and Chris you were invaluable. And Terry, better luck next time FFS. Cheers M

Thanks for this info. I am going to change the photo cell tomorrow and if this does not cure it then move on to the solenoid. I am assuming that it would need a leak in both the inlet and outlet for contamination to occur? Fingers crossed the first two fixes cure it otherwise it is a big job. M

Thanks for that Chris, either way it's only going to cost about £40 tops so if we get a solution I will be happy to see it. Will let you know the outcome whether pos or neg. M

Very strange symptom - firebird boiler Reillo burner just blowing

Hi John, the new box did not come with photo cell but as recommended by Terry I will buy one on Monday and try that first as it is not too pricy. The flame shut off symptom when the cover was closed was weird as this symptom was not there before the engineer visited. However now it still fires...

Hi Terry, thanks for the suggestion, I have already tried a new 530 SE but will take your advise and fit a new cell to see if that works. M

Very strange symptom - firebird boiler Reillo burner just blowing

Thanks again. I put it all back together and adjusted the air to 1.6 and it fired to temp then stopped as per the usual cycle and then re-started but failed to fire, just blew constantly but no flame out signal. I really don't think that contamination of the air intake would cause these...

Thanks for the diagram, that is the gasket for the circular flange that is bolted permanently to the fire box. I was wondering if the was a gasket where the burner meets up with the circular flange (HERE) as it is leaking slightly from the bottom.

Many thanks. I will do as you say. On closer inspection the flue is 2.2 so still too high. On removing the burner there is definite carbon on the bottom half of the mating collar suggesting it is not sealing perfectly but there does not seem to be a gasket nor any mention of one in the manual...

Oh yes, I am using kerosene with additive.

Very strange symptom - firebird boiler Reillo burner just blowing

Mine is a 50/70 I think with a G5X burner and it was the lowest output they has at the time so I am assuming 50 BTU/Hr. It has a .55 -80 deg H nozzle. Your damper setting looks to be on 2.5 (half way between the 2 and the 3) but is there a needle or marker I should be looking at. If it is...

Very strange symptom - firebird boiler Reillo burner just blowing

I have now taken out and inspected the baffles, (spotless) and there is nothing in the firebox. I have inspected both air inlet and flue outlet connections behind the boiler as best I can and the red silicone on the join between the outlet flue and boiler mounting plate has gone powdery white in...

You are quite right that the position of the air intake is painfully close to the outlet but this is exactly as perscribed by Firebird according to the manual. Shown below. I assume that the boiler was cleaned out by the qualified engineer when he serviced the boiler and I meticulously...

Very strange symptom - firebird boiler Reillo burner just blowing

Hi John, This is the diagram of my boiler, the photo was taken from the original Installation, Commissioning, servicing and User Instructions Manual which came with the boiler when I brought it from new some 20 plus years ago. I installed it myself and until this last month have had no real...
