Your instinct and inclination to get a structural engineer is not wrong. The builder should not have changed structural elements of the roof without structural engineers calcs and without making clear this is the approach that is going to be taken.
I'm confused as to why it was even necessary...
Thanks good point re: fensa too.
It's only a side and front window on one corner (approx 50x145cm and 80x145cm) and a single door hence I was wondering if it was within my capabilities. Also if perhaps such a small job most window fitters wouldn't be interested (or try to sell us something more...
We have a small front porch constructed of brick dwarf wall with wooden single glazed windows. The wooden frames are rotting and so is the door. How feasible is it as a DIYer to replace the windows and door with double glazed PVC or aluminium keeping the brickwork intact?
That's a big bungalow - are you sure those measurements are correct?
I'm no expert but having moved into a property a year ago with a view to doing a loft conversion I think you may be in for a shock. Ours is a smaller bungalow and we are looking at adding space for 2 bedrooms and a small...
To be honest it might be there is no right way out. I can't see anything on the label that would indicate either way. Well unless I hear otherwise on this thread I'll book a collection and update this thread on how it goes!
Hi so I have accidentally loaded 2 skip bags with soil with the seam and label on the outside. Is this going to be a problem when the waste company try and lift it on their truck with hiab / grabber?
I'd rather not have a bag split and spill a tonne of soil so if need be I'll just transfer it...
Have a small pantry in the corner of my kitchen and am planning on removing the pantry walls to create more space. The water comes in the corner of the building where the pantry is and goes up through the ceiling to the rest of the house. It's all copper pipe.
The pipe is clipped to one of the...
Thanks for sharing that detailed breakdown on your conversion. That seems like a really good price overall for the work you had done. Ours is a slightly smaller area and possibly more straightforward as standard pitched-roof semi bungalow. We have been quoted around 7-8k for trusses. Gives me...
Thanks, yes we're realising now we probably are worrying overly about things that the SE, architect and builder between them will take care of. Now we have had more discussion with the SE it seems like attic trusses are the way forward for our project and with the type of roof and gable/party...
Hi, sorry to be cheeky and hijack your thread - but how did you get on with replacing the roof with attic trusses and any advice as we're considering it for our loft conversion?
It seems extreme doesn't it to replace the whole roof? But I have heard it can work out well. You obviously need several days clear weather and very good planning for it to work. If it all lines up we could have a lot of the structural work done in a week or so. And a roof that's good for a long...
Hi all,
We're starting out on a loft conversion project. Have got plans made up to a point and looking into structural side. We'll be commissioning a builder to carry out the bulk of the work. However we've hit on a point where we're not sure how to proceed.
As we understand it traditionally...
