I purchased both, reconditioned, from National Boiler Spares as they come with a 1 year warranty.

No, I believe the bar handle is more cosmetic. It's just used to pull the door. The actual thumbturn does the locking.
I may be wrong though but it's not the traditional handle you pull up to engage the multipoint locks, it's just a single fixed vertical bar.

So I've experimented with shades up to French Oak and none have darkened the wood significantly. Even 3 coats of French Oak and the spruce now looks like pine.
I presume that by painting I'll lose the the grain in the wood so do I just need to go for something like Mahoganny?
