    thanks for your reply dcdec. The paper was fitted by a professional decorator a couple of years ago and is absolutely solidly on with nothing peeling back. Also it has lining paper underneat it and both are wallpapers paintable.

    could you at least please tell me why :? ? Because i'm thinking that any fumes/heat should escape via the builder's opening and shouldn't be escaping into the breast - because if this was the case, then i'd be getting fumes into upstairs bedroom.

    :lol: On a more serious note...a lot of ppl advice against hanging a tv above a fire, but surely these tv's can easily handle temperatures of upto 40-50C? Also did the heat from the fire affect your tv?

    @ prentice - if i can't hide the ropes, surely that would look daft and cheap? @ cantal - i intend to use a proper gas heater. I can add possibly add a recess skirting, but again this would not match the fire mantlepiece and also wouldn't it have to go on top and left/right sides? :?:

    i think your right mate. It now sounding like more headache than worth it. Someone mentioned that i could have "rope lights", but i'm just a bit confused as to how i can add them to this fire surround.
