    Boiler to filling loop connector

Hello - it's not leaking from the boiler end - it's leaking from the compression olive at the exit end - the pipe is corroded and pitted, so I don't think a new olive will solve the problem.

    Boiler to filling loop connector

Hello My filling loop started leaking from a bent connector (not the filling loop itself). It looks a bit like a 15mm tap connector but the end is flat like a flange, I've not been able to find one in B&Q, please can someone help me to ID it so I can order a replacement? I have attached an...

    Best sheet material for cupboard

Hello: My daughter has a bay window, in which she wants a window seat with two cupboard doors on the front. My current idea is use a sheet material and cut the holes for the cupboard doors, when I've hung the doors I plan to use mouldings around the edges to make them look more like doors...

Storing in attic - weight concerns

Geoff: Thanks for your response - There is currently a set of metal shelves you find in sheds up there, they are sat on the floor, but also fixed to the wall. The wall is the divider between our attic and the neighbours attic, it is brick all the way to the foundation as it is the dividing wall...

Storing in attic - weight concerns

Hello: I have an attic space constructed from rafters, as opposed to pre-built frames (roofing trusses). It is a pitched hipped roof on a semi. There is a big beam (12") forming the peak, and big beams also about 1/3rd then again about 2/3rds down the roof, these have rafters on them going...

    External expansion vessel best locations

Hello: Thanks for the help so far. I've checked the vessel more - lots of water came out of it, not just a bit, so I don't think it's moisture. I did try to recharge it according to the guide from this site, but could hear air escaping into the system and the pump auto vent started venting, so...

    External expansion vessel best locations

Hello: The expansion vessel on my central heating is faulty - the water pressure is all over the place when heating and it keeps opening the pressure release valve. I went to re-charge the expansion vessel but water came out of the air valve, indicating the bladder has failed. The boiler is in...

    Thermistatic mixing valve running cold?

I'm afriad I dont know, it's run by a water pump that shuts off when an internal pressure is reached. I estimate it's around 1.5 - 2 bar. The cold feed goes straight into the tank bottom (with a branch off for the TMV) and hot draw from the top - the same as a house hot water cylinder but...

    Thermistatic mixing valve running cold?

Hello: I have just fitted a thermostatic mixing valve to the water system on my yacht, this is the first time I have used one. It is not working however, when you open the hot water tap warm water comes out for around a second, then it goes cold and stays cold. Closing the tap and waiting a...

    Immersion heater tripping RCD

Further testing: I have brought the element home and wired it up to a plug with a RCD. I suspect it is earthing through the water, I dipped it in a sink (earthed) of water (obviously not the terminals) and it tripped the RCD twice on the run. Then I did the same test in a pyrex jar (i.e...

    Immersion heater tripping RCD

Unfortunately it's a non-standard size fitting, the thread is 1 1/4" and difficult to find = expensive, I managed to source one at around £130 delivered. Which is frustrating because a big powerful one is about £35, the non-standard fitting pushes the price up really high. It was measured...

    Immersion heater tripping RCD

Hello, please can someone help. I have a small (1KW) immersion heater on a boat in a small heating tank (20litres). None of the immersion system is earthed because eathing the electrics on board messes up the electroysis with the metal that sits in the water (prop shaft, eathing shoe etc)...

    Hob extractor hood

Hello: I have a 6" / 150mm extractor hood to fit into a single floor extension, I want to go through the roof but am having problems finding a relevant cowl for the roof for the 150mm duct. (Most of them are steel, which are expensive and not very nice to look at - they look like a chippy...
