    I have found a 32mm to 40mm running trap at http://www.bes.co.uk/products/124.asp#11173. You can then connect the sink to the 40mm pipework then use the washing machine boss on the 40mm pipework I mentioned before.

    As in the link by Obiplumbkinobi it probably is a snap on cap. Gently try and ease it off. In the link diagram it shows a large thumb wheel that screws on to hold it all together. Whatever is under there try tightening first.
