    Thanks - I filled the cracks just using normal filler but I did scrap out most of the plaster (2 cm channel almost down to the breeze block before hand). The house clearly has some movement to cause these cracks to reappear? maybe this is normal but I've never had a house with so many cracks...

    thanks hailsham. BTW it turns out i "welded" the relay in the old timer box to ON when i blew the fuse...hence why it is always on now! however this works just fine so i am goign to leave it alone now! marc

    ok, so today i bought a basic dial based room thermostat (non programmable) wired it up and it works just fine. It had normal connections too! i.e live, neutral and switch. there was non of this C, ON & OFF. are programmable thermostats definitely compatible with open vented systems...
