It was the door switch. The two plastic mounting pieces on the switch had broken off the switch body, so that the switch was hanging down. Took about an hour to fix, mainly waiting for the super glue to dry. Actual work time was 15 minutes.

Kenmore top loader, about 8 years old. Washer will fill and agitate, but timer stops at start of rinse cycle. Manually turning timer will not help. I pumped down the water level to clear and level switches if they exist, but no luck. The motor coupling was replaced last year and the symptoms...
