    Another neutral-earth fault???

Thanks - have done, can't see anything and it's only about 50cm long. It's never been touched from new, only I would have done so and I haven't. There definitely is something wrong with the off-peak element. I could test the off-peak wiring by connecting it to the boost element, but I think...

    Another neutral-earth fault???

No, I was there all the time and he didn't do anything to the wiring except to disconnect the supply to the faulty element after the fault occurred. As the element definitely seems to be faulty (in another post just now I've compared it with other elements) I am now convinced that the fault...

    Another neutral-earth fault???

I've got three elements to play with: a brand new one in its box, the boost one in the tank, completely disconnected, and the one in question likewise. Only that one gives such a (relatively) large PD. To reiterate, no heating has been going on. Thanks

    Another neutral-earth fault???

    Oh no I'm not!

    Another neutral-earth fault???

Yes, totally isolated it. But ... in this isolated state I get a reading of 600mv across neutral to earth. So I guess that my funny readings are being screwed up by some electrolytic action in the corrosion. Btw, I just hit 'ignore' when I meant to hit 'thanks'. Is there a way of...

    Another neutral-earth fault???

It is a cheap meter. The water has not been heated. I measured directly across the element terminals, not through the stat. no sign of a trapped wire no, it doesn't Would be nice to understand better, but replacement is cheap (although not easy) and if it all works okay I'll be happy! Thank you

    Another neutral-earth fault???

Thanks Starspark Yes, he disconnected the element and the fault disappeared, so definitely(?) something wrong with the element. Yes, there is an off peak and a boost element but I wanted to keep the post as simple as possible. The boost seems perfectly okay. Actually, thinking about...

    Another neutral-earth fault???

oh, I forgot to add that the meter is coming up with a negative resistance!!! I don't know what that signifies.

    Another neutral-earth fault???

Thanks Adam Thanks for reassuring me on that. The 16A MCB was supplied as a new one (although my old ones went back into the same bag as the new one came out of!). Its action feels right to me, just like all the others, and it trips immediately. I'm sure that if the electrician had had...

    Another neutral-earth fault???

I've just had a fully qualified electrician put in a new CU. It's a split board with MCBs and both sides protected by their own RCB. There was nothing wrong with the old board, but I wanted to add an electric shower. After installation and having passed all the tests etc we turned on the...

    wiring for electric showers again

is that damning with faint praise or are you saying that you strongly recommend them?

    wiring for electric showers again

Thank you I think you have hit the nail on the head! I'll use surface mounting, or possibly take it back. Thanks for resolving the issue. Mind you, I'd still like to know what you did about the cable coming out of the wall in yours. Presumably the wall is tiled behind your unit...

    wiring for electric showers again

Hi Spark1 Thank you for your concern. I didn't think it would be necessary to go into the detail I will now provide for the answer to a simple question. Originally I was going to tile the wall and have water and electricity supplies surface mounted. I was going to do all the work...

    wiring for electric showers again

Thank you both for your interest. I think that this will do it The service funnel has been taken off exposing the water inlet and the electrical connection block. The cable can come in on the surface from the top (ie left of picture) or bottom, or through a hole in the wall. The...

    wiring for electric showers again

Thanks Have found more than one in fact. Have discussed most of the issues you have cited, just not the aspect I mentioned. May be it makes a difference that as an MIEE I am "a competent person" although I am only too aware of my limitations. I can't ask my chosen person because he is on...
