Thanks for the help. removed now. First I removed the rod, but the position of the valve meant I couldn't turn anticlockwise. I then removed the arm, and was able to access the washer.!

Thanks - to disconnect the arm, do I push out the vertical rod (it's quite tight) - this would be towards the bottom of the image. Or do I try and unclip the level from the main body at the top of the valve? Just trying to understand the knack without (hopefully) breaking the plastic. Or indeed...
