retaining wall advice, materials and joints

I plan to build a retaining wall, about 24 m long with three corners. Approximately 3m + 9m + 10m + 3m. The ground is very stable chalk and there would be no significant loads on the retained soil. Options I am considering are 100 mm x 215mm x 440 blocks laid on their flats (belly down) The...

    Type 1F roofing felt or...?

Screwfix have this which seems to get decent reviews: PROTECT A1 ROOFING UNDERLAY 1 X 15M

    Type 1F roofing felt or...?

House will be scaffolded later this week and I should make a start fixing the rotten/shrunken felt at the eaves and verges. I plan to strip back about a metre or so and replace the felt, etc. The house is about 25 years old and has a ventilated cold roof with traditional roofing felt. I don't...

    Felt at roof edge

It sometimes rots back too far and can lead to dripping into the soffits. You might want to consider felt support trays that provide a new drip edge into the gutters.

    Bedding verge tiles (Marley Modern)

I have a bungalow with a roof of Marley Modern interlocking plain tiles. The roofing felt has rotted back at the verges and eaves and needs replacing this year. My plan is to do the verges and eaves only (will also fit support trays on the eaves) and feel reasonably confident to do so, but I...

Adding drainage holes above catnic lintel

This shows the lintel and desired weep vents somewhat better: http://iglintels.com/lintels/standard-lintels/timber-frame-lintels/

Adding drainage holes above catnic lintel

I have a 21-year-old bungalow of timber frame construction with brick skin. Condition is generally good all round but on one catnic lintel there are some early signs of corrosion on the outside edge; at present this is very minimal and you'd have to look hard to see it, but it was noted in the...

Worktop joining strips for roll edge (top and bottom)

I used a "standard" joining strip in the end and it looked perfectly acceptable. As for cutting the worktop, in the end I used a panel saw to cut slightly over-size and then trimmed the cut using a router. It gave a perfect finish. I also used a router and a homemade jig to cut a rounded corner...

Worktop joining strips for roll edge (top and bottom)

Looking on the 'net, I think this worktop may be described as bull-nose. On a separate, but slightly related matter, would I be right in thinking that when cutting worktop to length, it would be advisable to cut oversize using my circular saw and then finish to length with a router and...

    Purchasing a router table/bench

I'm not familiar with your router, but it's generally possible to mount a router into a homemade bench with relative ease. You may need to buy or purchase an insert plate, depending on your requirements. The most simple bench may be made from a sheet of mdf placed across a couple of saw...

Worktop joining strips for roll edge (top and bottom)

I need to make a simple 90 degree butt joint between two lengths of laminate worktop. The worktop is 38 mm thick and has a roll edge (top and bottom edge). I've found worktop joining strip, but it seems most suited to worktop with only the top edge rounded over. Is a suitable joining strip...

Your personal opinion on a tiled lounge + kitchen, please

Thanks for sharing your ideas. I personally like the idea of a tiled lounge with rugs - especially if it could run straight through the house and into the kitchen - but I know that won't be to everyone's taste. I know that many people like (or have) laminate flooring and I wonder how that is...

Your personal opinion on a tiled lounge + kitchen, please

I'd like to know what people think of a tiled floor (compared to a carpet) in a modern two bedroom house. I'm considering tiling downstairs, from the lounge straight through into the kitchen. My colour scheme is very neutral (almond white walls, and brilliant white woodwork), and upstairs I have...
