On some Hotpoint machines you can replace the bearings, and others you can only replace the whole drum/tub assembly as the tubs are bonded together and can’t be split.
You therefore need your full model no. checked to be sure.
(or you can check your tub to see if you have any tub bolts...
The temperature cut out stat. is usually near the sump touching the cavity base to sense the water temperature and will have a small red reset button.

Sounds like the heater might not be working. As you say, it is greasy and not washing very well - the flashing lights could be the error code for a faulty heater?
I would check the rear drum bearing (teardrop shape bronze bearing) as this could have worn away and cause the squeaking.
The silver bits could be coming from the heater element insulation.

It sounds as if the drain pump is not pumping out the water and causing an error code message. The drain pump could be faulty or the impeller isn't turning.
