Thanks guys, The only reason I'm looking at 6mm boarding is because both fitters suggested it. I was initially thinking about 18mm ply as a sound barrier, but am advised it'll be a waste of money. Is MDF a definite no-no?

I've been quoted the same price by two flooring specialists to staple 6mm MDF and 6mm marine plywood to my floorboards in readiness for new underlay and carpets. Flooring specialist number two tells me that under no circumstances should I consider MDF, as it's not waterproof. I'm not recarpeting...
