Thanks. What would be reasonable to pay someone to install the new consumer unit and move the isolation switch? I'm in London. Also when you say 'if I want one' does that mean that the existing fuse board isn't unsafe/outdated?

    Quotes for electrical work

So, it's no longer just about the cooker. We found an electrician who says, for safety's sake we should replace the fuse board with a modern RCD. New RCD + moving the isolation switch + cooker installation = c. £700. That's provided no faults are found when he tests the RCD. We'll...

Right. So nothing to do with the circuit breakers? Also I would expect Hotpoint to employ knowledgeable people. What is it that some people on here have against them?

Maybe he did say spur box  Here's what's currently on the wall: This is the cable going into the wall:

I'll have to upload that later as it'll take one person to hold the cooker forward and another to take the photo.

Probably, I'm not sure. I can't get a photo at the moment.

    Quotes for electrical work

He said the existing cable needed to be replaced with a spark box (and probably a new cable). Maybe a I should ring Hotpoint and ask them to explain more. So even if this guy is right and I'm just not explaining it all properly, no-one has any idea how much something like this would cost?

    Quotes for electrical work

I think the main reason was because of the existing cabling going directly into the wall. The new cooker is electric only, 50cm wide , ceramic hob, double oven. From what he said the circuit breakers seem to be a secondary problem, but still a matter of safety.

    Quotes for electrical work

As you come in the front door you'll immediately go upstairs. The meter is on the wall on the right between the door and the stairs. The kitchen refurb is still an idea. Still got a lot of saving to do. We'll only move the consumer unit if it's necessary.

    Quotes for electrical work

He said he couldn't fit it mainly because the existing cooker is wired directly into the wall. Apparently that's why I need a spark box in the kitchen. He didn't exactly say why I needed 6 - 10 circuit breakers just that the current consumer unit is archaic. The cooker was from Currys and...

    Quotes for electrical work

There are four circuit breakers in the current consumer unit. The guy who was unable to fit my new cooker said there should be between 6 - 10.

    Quotes for electrical work

    1. How much should I expect to pay to modernise the switches/circuit breakers, install a new spark box in the kitchen and to move the isolation switch above an electric cooker? This is in a one bed first floor flat. 2. If I am planning to refurbish the kitchen in a couple of years is it...

    Cooker Installation

Thank you. I've chosen a new cooker and downloaded the manufacturer's installation guide. 1.5cm is needed.
