When these fail does the stat usually go open or short circuit? Or could either occur? Thanks in anticipation.

Obviously the supplies shop is closed today. What would you expect to happen if I (temporarily) short the interruptor in the TC? Would this prove the above problem - I have tried this & the heater still shuts down after a minute or so!
