should my engineer be able to test all of the parts with a meter? Sorry to sound dum, what does the vapour switch look like and where is it located on the boiler?

Thanks for this. To be honest, i move house in less than a week so just want to get it fixed/replaced the most econimical route. Had someone round today who just seemed to guess at which parts needed so the bill could run into ££££'s. his final say was the Gas Valve but then if i give him the go...

How much would a replacement boiler be....any idea?

This one is around 1980, definately elec ign, comes one either when the room thermo tells it to or hot water come on to heat up. all electrics seem to work ok, its just that the thing does not seem to want to light!¬ (except for pilot!)

I'm happy to pay someone to come and do it although the guy that came today seems to think it may be the gas valve, although if he buys it it's non returnable so i'll have to stump out £240!

The boiler seems to be working and you get all the 'clicks' etc as normal, the pilot light comes on and the fan and all sounds to be working ok, its just that the main flame does not come on. (except on very few occasions) No CH or Hot water, it just seems that on the few occasions it does come...

Yes, around 20 years old but not keen on the idea to replace due to me moving house.!!!!
