    Elderly kettle whisle

Thank you, Tigercubrider. I had no idea such stuff exists! I do have a glue that's good in dishwashers but not up to 100C. Have tried that one - unsuccessfully. I will look up the JB Weld.

    Elderly kettle whisle

Thank you, Mattylad, especially for looking up some options. Sadly, both the Aga and Alessi whistles are the wrong diameter. I really think I have exhausted the replacement options. For now I have applied a 'bandage' of heavy-duty aluminium foil (Reynolds Wrap) around the cracks. It stuck to...

    Elderly kettle whisle

Thanks, Freddiemercurystwin (great hame ). I must have looked at 20-30 replacement whistle offerings but they all have the wrong diameter. There was a German one that might have worked but it cost body parts - something like £30.

    Elderly kettle whisle

Thanks, Ericmark. Sadly, all camping kettle whistles seem to have enormous diameters. I must have looked at a dozen (online!)- some sort of standardisation at work here, perhaps.

Thanks , Footprints. I see what you're suggesting. I just need to find the right combination of top and bottom end diameters! The adaptor will sit between the whistle, OD 24mm, and the spout, ID 25mm. This will require a joining piece with top end ID 25mm (whistle) and bottom end ID 29mm (to go...

    Elderly kettle whisle

I have a Dutch kettle, vintage 1993, with a delightful two-tone whistle. The whistle is internal, i.e. it fits inside the spout and is held in by a spring clip with two protrusions that expand when it is inserted. The problem is that the plastic retaining the spring is cracked now in several...

Power consumption of a smoke alarm

Well-reminded. Thanks. Any idea what the effect of voltage lowering will be? I'm struggling to think how fast 'charge evaporation' will affect the voltage, and hence how soon it will start chirping.

Power consumption of a smoke alarm

Right, RSGAZ, so here goes on the time the battery will last. A 160 mAh battery can supply 160 mA for 1 hour, or 160 microA for 1000 hours. So - using your CO monitor consumption - if it's supplying 20 microA, it should last 8000 hours, or 333 days. That's a year in old money. I'd be...

Power consumption of a smoke alarm

Thanks all for your input but what I really want to know is how much power a smoke alarm uses, hence how long a 160mAh battery might last (i.e. if it is in 'watch' mode only and doesn't have to ring any alarms).

Power consumption of a smoke alarm

I need to install new batteries on my bog-standard, inexpensive, ceiling-mounted smoke alarms, which are chirping. Both take 9V batteries and I want to replace them with rechargeable ones. I have established that: 1. I can get reasonably-priced NiMH batteries. 2. Rechargeable "9V" batteries are...

Seriously puzzled after investigating washing machine not draining. Pls Help!

I think you are right, John. And the so-called 'universal pump' (£20) looks like it should fit. The problem with the pump appears to be intermittent. What I don't need is a repeat of the original problem (1 October), when I was doing an emergency last-minute wash before a holiday - and the...

Seriously puzzled after investigating washing machine not draining. Pls Help!

Update: Another friend appeared unexpectedly at crack of dawn this morning. Between us we were able to tip the machine over to about 20deg and (with his 'screwdriver' micro-socket set) take the pump out, tra la. (y) We were unable to get it to come apart it but we checked it and found nothing...

Seriously puzzled after investigating washing machine not draining. Pls Help!

I am sorry you cannot hear it, John! But I can't think what else to try - unless you want to send me your email address. I am on [email protected]. Edit: Sudden thought. My Tinypic 'channel' is apparently http://tinypic.com/1r55h47n. Wonder if you could open the videos from there?

Seriously puzzled after investigating washing machine not draining. Pls Help!

Hmm, that's mysterious. Works for me today - but you have to be logged in to see the actual link. (If you right-click you should be able to open the video in a rew window or tab.) The noise was definitely coming from the pump. It was there whenever the pump was running, whether the drum was...
