Thanks for the advice but no joy with your suggestion.
After further investigation (Right switch) there is one twin and earth cable (red into L1 and black into L3) and 3 separate twin core cables, each has red wire and earth...the 3 red wires are wired to L2.
Does that help any further?
When replacing a switch plate with a metal one, where the back box is metal and has an earth connection...should I connect the earth from the back box to the switch plate earth or leave as is?

It could be used for drilling into stonework, so am I correct in assuming I would need something heavy? Would it be advisable to buy 2, 1 for heavy use and 1 for general use. I don't mind spending the money as I'm paying a lot for the house!!!
I'm just about to buy a house which needs renovating and would like advice on which SDS drill to buy for general DIY. I'd also be chasing walls for electric cable etc. Any advice would be gratefully received.
