I got it out eventually. It was fixed with some small metal sliding brackets so the surround was supposed to be lifted up to remove. They refused to slide though so it was a brute force job.

I couldn't get at it today so it may have to wait a few days - the wood will dry out a bit (have put it in room where I'm doing the job) but hopefully won't warp too much in that time.
