No, I haven't tried using either caulking or mastic. Both sound like good ideas. I was thinking of either using some type of glue or nailing the strips in. I will try the mastic first. Thank you.

How do I secure preformed weather striping in the precut/sawn slots my entrance door surrounds, sides and top? I push the molding strip into the slots but as soon as I release it the weather strip falls out. It looks like it should work but doesn't. Help. It's getting cold.
