i don't have a manual as the boiler was here when i moved in and i don't think the previous owner did any maintenance of anything...

no i do appreciate that kev i've now edited my original post to reflect that.... when the problem reoccurs i'll change the servo as advised :D

i'm by no means saying i've found a miracle cure for everyone, perhaps just a temporary fix... and even then i wouldn't have been able to do that without all the expert advice i've found on the forum
as the hot water worked perfectly and the heating worked but intermittently i ruled out the pump and the fan (i checked the pump tho)
i did suspect one of the control lines on the servo to be blocked at first as it has a very sharp bend in it which looks like it could easily get blocked...

mine wasn't always adjusted wrongly i think it had just worn loose over time as the boiler is about 15 years old and looks like it's never had anything done before, i just used a tiny bit of built in adjustment and the diverter is moving freely...
i have the same boiler and had the same fault until about 2 days ago..
i discovered that the microswitch on the diverter wasnt being triggered correctly.... i already posted it here //www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=73165
