Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

Dropped the boiler output to 24kW and it runs for much longer, plus more heat appears to get into the rads overall. There's still the issue that those rads closest to the boiler get hottest (and quickest) so I suspect that the system would benefit from proper balancing but, other than that...

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

28mm in and out from the boiler and throughout the HW circuit, dropping down to 22mm round both CH loops ;)

Superb ! I'll let you know how it goes.. Thanks again - top guys !

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

Quite an understatement.. ;) Unfortunately, we are where we are with the boiler. Its all bought and paid for and changing it (unless I really had to) would seem a bit daft.. :( So irrespective of it being rated 50% higher than is maybe needed, I quite like mickyg's idea of downgrading the...

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

Top man, micky. I'll give that a go. If I get a warm house, you're all invited around for a beer ! :D

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

Great post, many thanks.. :) Yes, my mistake, sorry. Its an Ultracom; this one: Very well put; that makes so much sense and was effectively what I was thinking but was unable to put into words..:) Absolutely.. I've had a quick a trawl around the 'net - some places are selling that...

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

I'll certainly give that a go - thanks for the suggestion. Its an auto-bypass [pressure] valve and the indicator is wound about 1/4 of the way down from the top. You must have posted whilst I was still typing, but the bypass pipe into which the valve sits does not get at all hot (it is the...

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

There is a bypass valve fitted (there wasn't until last Christmas, according to the plumber) between the flow and return in the boiler room - see drawing. But this pipe doesn't get as hot as the flow from the boiler which suggests that, if there is a link between flow and return, that is not it.

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

Pretty much, I think - there are some good guides on the 'net :). And even though all my rads (bar one) have TRVs fitted, I have wound down the lockshieds on those radiators which get hottest quickest such that they are barely open. As the rads get further from the boiler, the lockshields...

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

Thanks for the speedy replies chaps.. :) I removed the pump a couple of days ago and it was as clean as a whistle - no blockages, no rust, clean water etc. TBH, I would be surprised if any muck did get in there because there is a Magnaclean fitted on the return just before the boiler (and...

Rads slow to heat - bigger pump required ?

Hi all, wonder if anyone can offer any advice. Long story, but as a result of a pump which had been installed in the wrong direction (by the previous owners), our open vented CH heating system had been pumping over for at least 2 years. Consequently, any inhibitor had long since disappeared...

Ooops - shouldn't have started new thread.. Will amend previous one..:D

    Pumping over - Configuration ?

Some top advice there, joebloggs :) Why didn't I think about re-using the 2 port valves  The schematic shows the HW flow going into the upper part of the cylinder - I haven't verified this conclusively (requires lifting floorboards). It may be that if the installers did just swap the...

    Pumping over - Configuration ?

Thanks for the reply..:) I've been getting my head around the configuration of the system and I'm glad you agree the pump appears reversed.. We've been in the house for a couple of years and judging by the corrosion on the end of the vent pipe and the build up of sludge in the bottom of...

    Pumping over - Configuration ?

After repeated mains flushing and removal of a couple of completely blocked pipes, we have heating and hot water. I think most of the crud has been removed but plan to remove rads one by one and give them a proper flush in the garden over the next week or so. Fitted a strainer just behind the...
