What paints do I need to get a wood grain effect on timber furniture? I can find lots of guides how to do it, but nothing about the specific paints I need

I'd sort of worked out the top coat of glaze - well for glaze I read "clear varnish". lol  But will look at that Scrumble stuff

I've spent hours browsing the sites and youtube, but no-one seems to mention what paints to actually use for the base and grain coats.

you use bog standard oil based paints for the base coat, then you add artists' paints to the scumble (which is not varnish), when done, you apply varnish because the scrumble remains quite soft.

IIRC you start with the light colour first, then use the darker colour in the scrumble. You may also need a rubber rocker if you want knots.

btw, you have choice of either water based or oil based scumble, the later might be easier to work with as it dries slower, enabling you to, for example, use a badger brush to soften the grain if required
