Hi, I have a spare B&S Quantum XTE 40 which I want to use for a project. The mower will not start from cold without me putting a drop of fuel in through the spark plug or air filter. Once the machine is running, it is sweet as a nut and will start again very easily once warm.
I have stripped and cleaned the carb twice now (it appears to be in good order).

Is there any other reason why fuel is not getting through to the plug until warm? Compression issue perhaps?

Any help appreciated, thanks,
Oscar

Is it one with the petrol tank below the carb?

If it's a Quantum, it will have the fuel tank wrapped around the engine, and will either have a primer bulb on the carb or a choke linkage......could you confirm?

Hi, it is the one with the wrap around fuel tank and primer bulb on the front.

The primer bulb is a very crude sort of cold start system....when you press it, a small amount of fuel is supposed to jump out of the main jet and into the carb venturi, where it is drawn in to the engine. You should be able to see this spurt of fuel with the air cleaner element off.
If you can't see this fuel, then replace the gasket between the air filter housing and the carb.....its part number should be 272653 but there are others.
Its also vital that there is no distortion around that gasket area or the pumping action wont work.
At the same time when you have the back of the air cleaner off, feel for the small puff of air that the bulb generates.

Thanks John, I think you have just nailed it! I am just looking at part lists online as I have NO gasket between the air filter and the carb.

You'll find what you need from GHS Ltd, but its best to have your engine number handy....chances are it will begin with 12 or 13. The genuine Briggs item is best.
Hope it gets sorted!
John :)
