Inserting SDS drill bits?

I have just bought a Titan SDS drill and am following the instructions as to how to insert the drill bit. It says insert with a twisting motion until it latches, but I'm doing that but it's not getting very far in at all (you can still see part of the bit's grooves and it can be pulled out easily).

However, if I retract the locking sleeve I can push it in further (even though the manual states you only retract the locking sleeve when removing the drill bits). Then, it can't be pulled out, but it does have about 1.5 cm of play, in that it can be pulled at a little bit but not all the way.

Is this normal and something to do with the hammer action?

I've only used a normal drill in the past as I just need it for diy around the home, but the bricks are so tough that I want something with a little bit more oomph.

As long as it 'clicks' in, and cannot be pulled back out then it's fitted OK

Its because its new, once its worn in you'll be able to do as they say without pulling the foreskin back, just put the bit in and gentle pressure downwards while twisting should see it click in, the play is normal

Thank you for your reassurances. I used the drill this afternoon and it was fine. I wished I'd been aware of them ages ago, as drilling is my absolute least favourite DIY task. The bricks in my house seem to be made out of steel as far as normal drills are concerned, making simple jobs a right pain; but I was able to do what I wanted to do this afternoon in 10 minutes, which is normally unheard of when I've got to drill something.

I believe some people advise to put a small amount of grease on the bit before use, but that would probably do for several insertions.

My Bosch came with a little tub of yellow goop that I put a blob of down the shaft every once in a while just to keep it lubed. I don't worry about doing it every time I use it as it's not often used for long.

Brilliant tools.

My Bosch didn't. I had to buy my own, and it was quite expensive for such a small quantity.
