image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Hi, new to this forum so go easy on me! I've had a wood burner installed in my 1930's house for around a year but it isn't giving off much heat into the room. I'm pretty sure it's sat too far back in the recess and most of the heat is going into the brickwork so I want to move it forward slightly (with offset flue pipe) and widen and raise the dimensions of the recess. Ideally by one brick each side, and by two above. Only problem is there is some sort of brick gather at the back which I'm not sure on. Will I be able to remove this gather? It's difficult to tell if it's structural or not. There is a concrete lintel at the front of the recess which I installed so the front is no problem. Would it need another lintel at the back if the gather was to be removed? It may not even be a gather I'm not sure as they bricks are quite loose. Any help greatly appreciated.

What size output is the stove rated at, and what sort of heat loss has the room being heated have?
I cannot see, by bringing the stove forward a little that it much improve heating the room.

Hi, thanks for the reply. It's a 5kW and the room is fairly well insulated from draughts etc. I always have the curtains shut when it's on. Originally the height above he stove was a lot less (2 courses of bricks) and when I raised that the heat output into the room improved dramatically.

Do you have normally have a register-plate installed above your stove (possiby removed for photos ) or is the chimney open and sucking up all the heat ?

Hi yes I've got a register plate and as you rightly say I removed it for the photos.

Put some Baco Foil behind the fire, it reflects the heat forward, back into the fire and not allowing it to heat up so much brickwork.

Hi frank, thanks for the reply. I'll try that, but any suggestions for the sides? Do you not think it will make much difference to widen the opening or move the stove forward? Thanks peter

I think that what should be fitted is a curved register plate, so hot air rising from the fire can be guided upwards and outwards under the mantle piece and into the room. Once this airflow is set up, then natural convection would maintain it. The problem as I see it that the register board is flat and set higher then the fire opening, so it catches the hot air and stops the natural air flow. The problem is how to do it and how to make it look nice. I actually installed a fan under the register board to blow the air outwards and slightly downwards to get it out of the trapping area. It sort of worked, but was noisy. To shift kilowatts of heat takes a big fan (think turbo heater). I would be interested in a solution too. The Baco foil made a noticeble difference to the temperature of the outside wall behind the fire.
