....space is tight and I want to replace this basin waste with a Click and Clack fitting. I cannot see how to undo the existing waste with no obvious securing nut.

You undo and remove the pop up waste metal rod and then unscrew the whole metal underside section.

trouble that you may have though is the way the top is cutout underneath, you'll need to unscrew the waste section inside the basin

1. Click clack wastes, in my experience, rarely work for more than a year or two.
2. If you are really lucky, you might be able to unscrew the fitting from inside the basin. This will be relatively thin, probably chrome plated, metal with five or six holes in it. Normally this is held in place (special tool or long nosed pliers) and the underneath piece (again chrome plated) with the push up rod disconnected rotated onto it.
3. If you try the above method and the inside waste part breaks you will have no alternative to removing the basin.

we have a click / clack waste on 3 basins , worst thing we had , constantly sticking so cannot undo , i suspect problem is with limescale , and has to be cleaned with limescale remover pretty much every 6mths - one has broken. it has a copper basket which has come off the mechanism
when i installed a new basin in the cloakroom with an old PLUG, I installed one of the half turn flip types
