    Speaker holder built into fireplace

I have built a speaker holder in the top part of my fireplace (just below the mantlepiece). I had a British Gas engineer get vaguely threatening about it not being safe and inventing wildly stupid scenarios in which it would fall off, catch fire, burn the house down, and our insurance not paying...

Soldering Irons - Ultra fine soldering

From what I can see, the lead free ones melt at a higher tempperature. "common alloys are 60/40 Sn/Pb which melts at 370 °F or 188 °C and 63/37 Sn/Pb used principally in electrical work" Although I did encounter some magical solder that wouldn't melt even at 400+. I was trying to replace a...

    Loft conversion........sort of

:-) Thanks goingdigital that's positive to hear. Dormer is always the nicest option but velux is more affordable. Plus, a dormer needs planning permission from what I understand as your actually changing the volume of the house. I don't think you would get planning permission for a dormer if...

    Loft conversion........sort of

OK, as stupid as this question my be, I'll kick myself if I don't ask and it turned out to have been possible. Is is possible to raise the roof on an end terrece? I would assume the answer would be absolutely not because of the fact that you're joined to another house.

Soldering Irons - Ultra fine soldering

Thanks to you both for your tips on this. If you're finding that surface mount resistors aren't hard then it must be my technique that is bad, probably in part because I'm not using the right kit. I have a tip just like the one in the link (I've actually got three irons of various fixed...

Soldering Irons - Ultra fine soldering

Hi, Does anyone know the best tools for doing ultra fine soldering. Trying to solder components now is starting to feel like performing brain surgery with a spoon! Everywhere I've googled people talk about fine tipped soldering irons. I already have a fine tipped one though and could do with...

    CONDENSATION IN LOFT (ANSWERS)

Hi John D, Good link, with some good common sense solutions. Wet coats hanging up: solution = umbrella Tumble drying is not always a solution as it can cause clothes to shrink, Solution: tumble dry what will not shrink and use a clothes horse + dehumidifyer for those that will. That...

    Loft conversion........sort of

    Thanks for you're advice, I really appreciate you both taking the time to explain what you did. It's certainly put a smile back on my face as I know it's do-able. Some brilliant solutions. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D I'd better have a look and see...

Loft Rafters - White Spot Mould + Damp

Thanks for that, looks like treatment is a complete waste of time in this particular case. I must have spoken to loads of people now who have said that this will just go away once the source of the condensation on the tiles is sorted out. Below is what it looks like. What doesn't help...

    Loft conversion........sort of

Thanks to both of you for your advice on that, the option you've mentioned will no doubt be the only real solution I have open to me. The fact that you've said the beams you've put down run parallel to the purlings must mean that the walls you'r talking about are the gable end and the...

    Funky Loft Insulation

This stuff is awful to get up! The was either spray foam or it's just so old it's degraded. Either way, a dustpan and brush and a £60 bagless hoover seems to do the trick! Always wear skin and breathing protection!!!
  15. Bare Tiles

    Bare Tiles

Someone told me the stuff on them is called internal pointing. Whatever it is half of it had fallen off in pieces and mixed in with the fluffly old insulation! Grrr.

Tip for anyone clearing out insulation, get a respirator! They might cost more than the little white face masks, but I found mine didn't seal properly and breathing out kept steaming up my goggles. The respirator had a good seal and stopped goggle fog! :-)
  17. Mould on the rafters

    Mould on the rafters

Mould on the rafters. The guy we had to look at this said it was white spot mould. I was later told by the husband of a colleague that this is just mould and the guy was just trying to make himself sound experienced so they could charge more to clean it up.
