    Painting over lime wash

Have to say that our "lime specialist" in the village raved about thickening up the paint, (but only slightly), and now that I think about it, the wall he painted has not even lasted into the next year! Thanks again.......guess I'll be getting the lime wash out again!

    Painting over lime wash

This is a looooooong story.... Half the back of my cottage has a bathroom extension - brick built and concrete render. My house is built into a hillside, so I excavated down to the foundations, used a specialist waterproof render from foundations up to 1.5' above ground level then backfilled...

    Painting over lime wash

Can anyone give me some advice on how I go about painting on top of lime wash? Part of my external wall is lime pointed stone, (random stone). It was lime washed a few years back (with about 4 coats of "St Astier" paint), which I'm not too impressed with. I'm wanting to paint over it with a...

    Any advice on Masonary Paint?!?!?

I live in a village 1500' above sea level, (so we're sometimes above cloud level and occassionally IN cloud level), in a 250+ year old cottage. The lime pointed walls have long since been rendered with concrete render and it hasn't presented any problems. My problem is my gable wall...

    Swollen Door

Re. the dowels, you mean clamp it together, drill holes and screw together, then plug the screwholes with the dowels to cover it up?!? It is an external door. The house is VERY well insulated and I have a Heat Recovery Ventilation system installed so there is no condensation on any of the...

    Swollen Door

I've got a hardwood Framed, Ledged, braced and battened door. Its the "proper" door to have as I live in a conservation area. Its been in for 6 years now, and it has been well maintained and visually does not need any treatments, (but I checked back on similar posts before starting this one...

    problem manhole cover

I think you're right noseall. Whatever I do, if I keep the concrete slab, I would have to use grease, as the slab is downhill of where the surface water comes, so without the grease there will always be a trickle of muddy water working into the chamber and blocking the drain. Because the slab...

    problem manhole cover

That sounds a great idea! However, the slab is about 4" thick and its bloody heavy. The only way anyone has been able to shift it, was by levering it up onto an edge, and then "walking" it away or flipping it over. I really like the above idea, as that sounds like the kind of remedial work...

    problem manhole cover

Thanks for all the advice.....I feared I was making a mountain out of a mole hill and so I was! Re bedding the slab on mortar - I've rodded the drain 4 times now, and from the glugging noise coming back up through the bathroom sink I might need to do it again. This is the first time however...

    problem manhole cover

I have a selfish eejit for a neighbour....... I have a brick built rodding chamber behind my house. At the moment, it is covered by a precast concrete slab and its worked fine for the past 50 years or so. Problem is that my eejit neighbour has done works to a plot of ground he owns, (and...

    check valves

Hi! A simple question here, which you guys will know the answer to straight off and only an amateur like me would ask!! I'm looking to use flexible pipes to take the supplies to my washing machine, (as there will be no service void behind the cabinets), but the catalogues say I need to use...

sliding cupboard, (not wardrobe), door gear

There are quite a few sliding door kits on ebay and I stumbled across the Henderson Slipper sliding door, which are 2 doors that bypass each other. I e-mailed Henderson and their tracks are both fixed seperately, so I can mount 1 track and put both doors on the one track so they slide apart...

sliding cupboard, (not wardrobe), door gear

Hi. I'm refitting my neighbours kitchen and its causing me grief! Its a very small kitchen so every bit of space is used. There is a cupboard built INTO the wall above the kitchen sink, and beneath the wall cupboards. There are two (kitchen) cabinet doors which close the cupboard off...

Economy 7 with Electric Underfloor Heating???

The house is not yet occupied so my electricity over the last 3 years is only about £250, although I have had a dehumidifier running 24/7 for about 2 years. I had readings on the control and day, but nil on the night. I think that because my usage is so low, it slipped through the net, (its...

Economy 7 with Electric Underfloor Heating???

Hi Scud, and thank you so much for this. For the 3 years the meter has been installed, its been broken, as I have readings on the "Control" and "Day" meters, but not the "night" - so the customer services advisor said the timer on the "Night" meter was broken and someone is coming out to fix...

Hi there. If you see this "SCUD", can you look at my query about Economy7 and underfloor heating please? You seem to be in the know, (unlike those at Scottish Power!), and I need some advice! Thanks.

Im on "White Meter ComfortPlus", so I actually have THREE rates - a "control", "night" and "day". Its a very modern looking digital meter, although my communications with Scottish Power have revealed to us both that its been broken since the day it was installed!!!!! The last e-mail I...
