    GX40 light bulbs

Thanks all for your advice and help. No reply from Aurora so I think I'm going to replace the fittings. I've done quite a lot of automation in the house - Lightify Smart bulbs, electric curtain rails controlled by Raspberry Pis linked to Siri, and set up automation schedules, etc I think I'll go...

    GX40 light bulbs

Thanks both. Yes the pin spacing is indeed 40mm. I guess they were intended to be a new standard but never took off. This is what they look like IMG_2177 by dmccormick posted 5 Jan 2017 at 10:18 AM IMG_2175 by dmccormick posted 5 Jan 2017 at 10:18 AM Will wait for reply from Aurora, but was...

    GX40 light bulbs

Moved into a new house which has unusual ceiling lights. They are GX40 fitting capsule bulbs. Several now blown and trying to find replacements but google is not forthcoming. The existing bulb is made by Aurora - AU-DFG927 9W 2700K. Seems to be discontinued. Any ideas where might find...

Renault Espace petrol engine start then cut out

Thanks ch. I don't think it does have an idle valve. I'll have a look at taking the throttle valve off and giving that a clean.

Renault Espace petrol engine start then cut out

Hi All, We still have our 3.5 V6 petrol Espace going strong at 176000 miles. However, it has a starting problem:- When cold if you press the start button, the engine fires and starts quite easily but immediately cuts out after the initial automatic rev. If you hold the accelerator pedal...

    Servicing your own car

I think that was the Espace III. The Espace IV we have is a 3.5 V6. The engine code is V4Y which I think is a Nissan engine. It's thirsty, but it's satisfying at the lights to be in a "mummy car" and leave the BMW boy racers standing :)

    Servicing your own car

Thanks to everyone for your advice and encouragement. I've just ordered all the bits in for the Espace from GSF and Eurocarparts and am planning to get it MOT'd on Monday to see if anything extra is needed and then do the service myself. Fortunately it doesn't have a timing belt (it's a...

    Servicing your own car

This is a bit of a long story so the summary is - how hard is it to service your own car and find out the list of things that need doing... I've been doing various jobs on my car (1996 Audi A4 2.6 V6) and my wife's car (Renault Grand Espace 2004 3.5 V6) to save money. This began when the...

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

Its, not pretty: but this is better: Thanks for all advice. I spent less than it would have cost for the garage to do the work and now I have a MIG welder to play with

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

The bolts have to be done up to 75Nm. I am guessing that trying to hold the nut with a screwdriver whilst doing the bolt up is not going to work. This is based on the fact that in undoing the bolt in the first place, it broke the captive nut loose rather than turn the thread. Although that was...

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

Not sure if it's clear on the photo, but there's no space to hold a nut in place with either a spanner or socket or mole grips: IN this photo: the red circle is the end of the bolt. The track arm is in the way of getting anything to this, especially as it will be in the wheel well...

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

I know it is barmy for just this job, but as mentioned I've often fancied having a go at welding and being able to make things so this is really an excuse to take the plunge. A garage quoted me £300 to do the suspension arms(100 quid each and 50 extra each if they had trouble with the bolts)...

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

Answered my own question - couldn't get it hot enough to braze. Am thinking more about the welder. Now I've read more it seems you need an arc welder if you want to weld outside and weld thick things and a MIG welder for thin metals like car panels. My immediate need is for this captive...

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

I decided to treat myself to a MAP torch and bench vice (black and decker workmate not up to gripping the nut whilst being torched I think). And after getting the net red hot it was actually quite easy to unscrew the stud. Wife is not too happy about the vice on the kitchen worktop though...

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

Thanks for all advice. Yes expensive to get a MIG just for this, but there have been a few times where I could have done with one in the past so thinking about it a bit more. I've read a lot on the welding forum and realise it's not easy or quick to learn to weld, so i might get a local...

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

Great. Really I just wanted someone to tell me to get a welding kit :D Have wanted to for a while and my 9 yr old son expects me to be building all kinds of gadgets if I do. Am I right in thinking that a MIG welder is the way to go for a complete novice and this kind of job ?

Captive nut in suspension mounting bracket

I think the issue will be that you have to put the track arms into the bracket before remounting and the track arm covers over where the nut would be. I think I wouldn't be able to get a spanner or anyhting to grip the nut whilst trying to fit the bolt. Maybe a washer that has jagged edges...
