    Shower door seal

We have a Roman shower enclosure with a pivot door. The door closes onto a plastic strip which fits onto the metal edge of the shower and acts as a seal. The door is held in place by a ball catch. I need to replace this plastic strip as it is very gunged up. I have removed it but there is not a...

    Cleaning old brass hinges

Currently repainting all the doors and frames in the house but the current hinges look past their best, covered in oil based paint from years ago. I could simply replace the hinges but wondered if there was an easy way to remove all the old paint. When I say easy, I don't mean wire wool and a...

    Changing bathroom spotlight bulbs

I needed to change a bulb recently and instead of going into the loft I decided to pull the surround down from inside the bathroom and change the bulb that way. That was the first mistake as pulling the surround down took with it some paint so that had to be touched up. There were 2 tiny screws...

Bits in water based undercoat and gloss

I am having problems currently when using both w/b undercoat and gloss with a lot of bits in the paint. I have used the paint from the tin and have passed it through a kitchen sieve into a paint kettle but the bits were still there. It's Johnstones Aqua by the way. I'm now wondering whether...

Painting window sills with w/b gloss

Anyone got any tips on how to do this better? I'm fine with doors and frames but I undercoated a window sill yesterday and was not impressed with my efforts. Lots of brushmarks. I found it tricky to lay-off on a flat surface. I know one mistake I made was to do this when the sun was streaming...

Johnstones Aqua - still the best?

Thanks Chri5, I'll give them a try. Another question. Glossed a door over the weekend (that had been undercoated with Johnstone's Aqua) but was slightly disappointed with the finish as it has quite a few air bubbles in the finish. The only thing I did differently was that I shook the tin rather...

Johnstones Aqua - still the best?

I need to start painting all the spindles and handrail soon - what's the best way to rub them down? Basic sandpaper? I have read about a abrasive cloth that would 'fit' around the spindles better. What kind of brush for the spindles? I'm a little concerned that a normal brush might struggle a...

Johnstones Aqua - still the best?

I undercoated 3 doors and frames on Saturday with Johnstone's Aqua. Generally pleased but I have a couple of runs on one of the doors. I didn't spot them until I'd finish the door so didn't try to brush them out. Would I be able to sand the run out with a bit of fine sandpaper and then re...

Johnstones Aqua - still the best?

I posted my review of Johnstone's Aqua on another post a few weeks ago. I used it for the first time a month or so ago, not having used w/b gloss for a couple of years after a bad experience (brushmarks galore!!). I am really impressed with the Johnstone's Aqua. I prepped well - sanded existing...

    4" roller sleeves for emulsion

Can anybody explain why the pile on a 4" roller is much longer than that on a 9" roller, even though both are sold as smooth surface sleeves? And this from the same manufacturer. I like to use the smaller roller around and above windows under plugs etc but have found that the pile can sometimes...

    painting doors and skirting

I love gloss. Ok, I'm of a certain age (i.e. over 50) so was brought up in the gloss era but I still like it. After much deliberation I have plumped for Johnstone's Aqua (I was going to go for Bedec but we have a Johnstone's Decorating Centre round the corner). I'm really impressed with the...

    Painting a door frame

Thanks, that's makes sense. The door will be painted last for this reason. But is there any logical reason not to paint the frame up, across and down (whilst I work on my painting speed!!)? Would the finish look different on the sides as I would be laying off upwards on one and downwards on another?

    Painting a door frame

I understand that the correct way to paint a door frame is the top part first and then the 2 side parts. Does this change if you are using water based paint? My thinking is that if I do the top part and then one of the side parts by the time I get to the 2nd side part the top has dried enough...

    Stripping paint

I painted a door a few months ago and made a right pig's ear of it. I used water based paint over oil based and did everything I should i.e. flattened the old gloss, undercoated and then w/b gloss but I suspect my technique wasn't good enough so was left with horrendous brushstrokes. So I want...

Bedec Aqua - gloss or satin

After much deliberation I've decided to go down the Bedec route for my woodwork. But I'm not sure which to choose. At the moment all the woodwork is oil based gloss which although I'm told is highly unfashionable although we like the "wrapped in cling film" look. As such should I be going for...

    A4000 Trevi Blend Built-in

I had the above shower fitted a few years ago but recently needed to change the shower head and hose. Bought both from Homebase but I have got water leaking from where the shower hose joins the valve (i.e. not where it joins the shower head). I have changed the washer but this has made no...

Thanks John. I'll try that over the weekend!!

    Toilet cisterns overfillling

Thanks for your replies. Oddly when I raise the float by hand to the horizontal position (i.e. the approximate fill level of the cistern) the water doesn't stop. Something else that seems to be connected is that this happens more when the water pressure to the may be lower because of the...

    Toilet cisterns overfillling

Our 2 upstairs toilets have recently started to overfill meaning that the toilet constantly flushes. One of the toilets is worse than the other in this respect. I have looked in the cistern and it looks as if the valve is a Torbeck type but probably not an actual Torbeck valve. All I can see...
