    Plastic headlight protection coating

Hi I want to protect my headlight fronts from yellowing/fading and am seeking your comments. The only "recommedation "I have come across is from Scotty Kilmer on YT who always praises Meguiar's Keep Clear Headlight Coating which isn't available in French shops: do you have any other...

Black-box recorders in new cars from July 2024

I was very surprised to read this: was it generally known and not discussed ( seems unlikely ) ? EDR =Event Data Recorder. https://uk.motor1.com/news/706444/new-car-black-box-mandatory-europe-2024/ "According to the documentation provided by the European Commission, an EDR records and stores...

Tripling parking charges for SUV/heavy cars in Paris.

Parisians have voted to triple parking charges - from €6 /hr to € 18 for cars exceeding 1 600 kg ( 2 000 kg for EV ). This is basically for non-residents as residents, taxis, emergency vehicles, tradesmen and handicapped will be exempt. This was decided by referendum of Paris residents with...

Decking-oil : white spirit instead of turpentin

Hi I am re-coating my larch decking using an oil that is natural i.e. without solvents. It says that is can be thinned for extra penetration using turpentine. I don't have any and it's a long trip ( 30 miles ) to get any. Can I use white spirit instaed ? Thanks

    Phone-based mapping/route-finding.

What are your experiences of using Waze or Google as map-guidance solutions when you are driving ? Several times I have been given completely wrong information i.e. being told I am at my destination when I am two/three miles away or given ridiculous instructions to leave a completely empty...

    G4 20W 12V

Any suggestions please for a decent long-lasting on-line brand for the above . The current unbranded ones died after 10 years. Of the current two, one is blackened but the other seems unmarked and no visible breaks. Should it still light if the other fails ? Thanks

    Change rear-brake pads - Vectra C

Today I set out to do the above. It was only the second time I have ever changed rear pads on a car needing a rewind tool, and the first time I used a pair of circlip pliers as I didn't have the tool: as I recall it was laborious but went smoothly enough. Following that I bought a kit for the...

    Blackcircles : on-line tyre purchases

Hi All Just asking if you have ever dealt with this company and what your experiences were ? I did this winter and things were not great. A short resumé of my experiences. 1) Ordered some unusual winter tyres - Nokian brand - computer said in stock and I ordered 2) Next day someone calls me...

    Dash warning-lights - MOT fail

Hi On another forum, one poster claimed the following. "In U.K., any wrongly illuminated dash warning light can now result in an MOT test failure." Is that correct, that a yellow warning-light will be a fail ? The actual discussion was about TPMS, so a second question would be if these are...

    Suspension noise - Vectra C

Hi I have just started hearing a "clonking " noise from the suspension when driving over poor road surfaces. When I bounced the car to locate the sound, it was clearly from the front left. Jacking up that corner and twisting the wheel didn't give a clear result, but possibly a slight movement...

From July 6th the EU may have been limiting your speed.

New EU regulation that new models (N.B. not simply new cars ) have to be fitted with equipment that recognises speed-limits and obeys them, unless you deliberately over-ride it. https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/103530/eu-demands-speed-limiters-all-new-cars-know-rules-and-how-they-work

    Flattened car-battery charging my phone.

Recently I left my phone on charge inside my car - engine not running, but with radio turned on with no sound. When I returned 75 minutes later the car battery was flat, only showing dash-lights which then also disappeared when I turned the key a second time. The battery is at least 5 years old...

    Vectra C 1.8 16v petrol - thermostat and oil

I was back _in the UK a few weeks ago and had the full cambelt/auxiliary belt plus w/pump/tensioners replaced @100 000 - this at a "known" garage. On the return journey - immediately on fast dual-carriageways/motorways - I noticed fairly quickly that the temp gauge wasn't moving off its stop...

    Tread depth - new tyres

I bought myself a new set of winter-tyres the other week ( Avon WT7 195- 65 x 15) and decided to measure the new tread depth. I do this because I change winter/summer tyres during the year and like to keep some kind of record of wear. Last time I did this with a set of Nokian several years ago...

Killing moss on roof - why do you need to flush ?

Hi I have a small and growing moss problem on my roof and DIY solutions on the net recommend 50/50 bleach /water or same with vinegar, but also then say flush copiously with water . Why ? I'd prefer not to heave buckets of water onto the roof if unnecessary. I live in the French Alps and...

    The demise of the Mondeo

Well, there it is. The last Mondeo will be built in Valencia in 2022. I feel rather sad about this, which is unusual because i don't think I have ever driven one. It was however on my preferred list of cars to buy whenever I needed to change (Vectra being the other ) but fate decreed that over...

Why is Land-Rover still such an unreliable marque ?

I understand that unreliability can continue through a marque because it is using an engine that was introduced 30 years ago: I (half ) understand that some very expensive moulded plug/switch components are used for decades even though they are shown to be defective, but I am surprised about...

Do car engineers deliberately make things difficult ?

Hi A simple question really. I want to change my oil and find that I need a T 45 key to do it ( used to borrow from a friend who is no longer there ). Now this plug does not need a great deal of torque , so why a T45 ? Do engineers rate these things to the diameter of the plug - or, as I...

Is it possible to replace a glued wind-screen yourself ?

Hello all My w/s has a large crack ( 500 mm+ ) and needs replacement. I am not insured for that because with £ 100 excess and another £ 100 to go fully-comp, I judged it not worthwhile, having only suffered one screen breakage in my motoring-life. Unfortunately because all French policies have...
