Damp from chimney. Evidence in loft and on external wall

Thanks for all these helpful suggestions and ideas everyone. To fully clarify- there is no evidence of any wet on the brick wall. The dark area on the top is old staining but this hasn't changed even in severe wet and windy conditions lately. The felt under the tiles in this area appears to be...

Damp from chimney. Evidence in loft and on external wall

I've just noticed this slipped tile/s at the base of the chimney (photo taken from the rear of the house)- could this be the root of the damp coming into the chimney area?

Damp from chimney. Evidence in loft and on external wall

Thank you Ree ...plenty to think about in your answer...thank you very much. I now tend to think the problem is indeed with the flaunching at the top. It was "improved" some months ago but merely by adding fresh cement on top and curving the surface more I now guess that this area is porous...

Damp from chimney. Evidence in loft and on external wall

Although this side hasn't been pointed - the existing pointing had been examined and is said to be in reasonables order with no loose parts. Perhaps that growth has appeared because the chimney is wet most of the time ( ...and not the cause of the wetness...maybe!?)

Damp from chimney. Evidence in loft and on external wall

Thanks for your reply Ken. Yes it is a small (very small) growth of some kind. It's so tiny compared to the amount of wetness though. Surely that it must be more of a weakness to let in so much water.

    Ferroli F30 Boiler

Well that's a friendly reply! I have had the boiler serviced since being installed. It has worked well to date. I was merely wondering what might be wrong and I thought that someone here might offer some guidance.

    Ferroli F30 Boiler

I have had a Ferroli F30 boiler for some time without much of a problem. However it's nowplaying up... What seems to be happening is that when there's a demand for radiator heat the boiler fires and then...after some minutes... the pilot light suddenly goes out and the boiler stops. Some...

    Car MOT

Yes... sounds like the head gasket's gone! Sorry but it's expensive to correct. During the mot test the engine has to be excessively revved and if the head gaskets not been changed when it should have been then it can go badly wrong in the test. I had a Megane once and when the test centre...

Installing multifuel stove/fire. Prob with register plate

 Think thats it then...so push up the flue pipe ...bring stove forward and then take out the flue pipe for the sweep's brushes. That sounds like the best answer to me. Hopefully then I won't disturb the plate... have I got that right? All I will disturb when the chimney is to be...

Installing multifuel stove/fire. Prob with register plate

Thanks for these helpful tips. The Sweep actually mentioned opening up the chimney breast to form an access window but I just didnt fancy that even though it would be hidden behind a picture. Instead of the above I am trying to think of a way that would make the removal of the plate easy...

Installing multifuel stove/fire. Prob with register plate

Well I know its not supposed to be a diy subject because of all those regulations but I am having a go. The chimney has been swept and is in sound leakproof order- So I've decided to proceed without lining and I will insert about 2ft of metal flue through the reg plate into the chimney...
