How Do I know If My Washer's Motor Brushes Are Knackered ?

Thanks Bankrupt My brother-in-law is a mechanic - he came round yesterday and said the Bosch motor is pretty much the same as a car alternator - he looked at the brushes and confirmed they're knackered. he also reckons there's no damage on the motor but it looks a bit worn so combined with...

HW works ok but no CH

Good idea - interesting you mention letting hot water through - ever since we've lived here, whenever the hot water is on most radiatiors in the house heat up. British Gas said there was nothing they could do about it, it was caused by bad pipe work. A mate who used to be a plumber...

HW works ok but no CH

Yes these look the same - although the new ones seem to have a stud or screw on the top of the cover - the opposite end to the cable. Is it a good idea to replace just the power head - or is it possible that the valve itself could be jammed ?

managed to get a mirror down the back it's a Honeywell - exact same model as the HW valve. Does it need like for like replacement ? I guess that would make the plumbing easier.

HW works ok but no CH

You're right it looks pretty old. It appears as though someone in the past has tried to get the cover off without removing the retaining screw - the cover looks bent. This is probably because the cover retaining screw seems to be at the bottom of the valve - facing the floor. you can see...

HW works ok but no CH

I've done some more testing. With the thermostat ON - I held the lever on the valve in the picture against the pressure and tested the orange wire - it wasn't live. With the thermostat ON - I pressed the hot water advance switch The lever on the other motorised valve moved itself -...

HW works ok but no CH

Thanks for this - at least something looks right. Sorry to be so thick, but I can't hear anything in the airing cupboard. The only time I hear anything is when I press the HW Advance button. When should I hear the pump ? and what should it sound like ? Would a faulty pump cause the...

HW works ok but no CH

Here's my wiring - the junction box is British Gas' idea - the connection goes direct into the motorized valve as you can see. I tested the connections with the thermostat OFF and only one wire was live. With the thermostat ON - there are 2 live connections - so I'm guessing both the...

HW works ok but no CH

I used a circuit tester - a battery circuit with LED. I took the thermostat off the wall and put the tester across the 2 pins with the thermostat in the off state. The 2 pins had no circuit across them. When I switched the thermostat ON there was a circuit across the 2 pins - the switch was...
