    Outside light query

Don't shoot me if this is a stupid question to ask but I want to install a new external light on the outside of my garage but the only nearby accessible power is a standard mains socket. My question is can I use a standard 3 pin plug on the end of the new light cable and plug it into the mains...

    LV lights wires

I have 4 LV cabinet lights installed and the length of wires from each of them on the top of the cabinet means there is a big mass of wires. I know the obvious thing to do would have been to cut them down before wiring them in but now I have is there any harm in just using a cable tie to tie...

    Wiring a transformer

I have a transformer that I bought seperately to connect my cabinet lights. The transformer has a live and neutral coming out of one end and two cables coming out of the other which are the same colour, covered in like a fabric material. My question is what wires connect to what?

    Explain 12v transformers

Providing you keep within the maximum power rating can you connect as many fittings as you like to a transformer or does it depend on how many terminals it has. I.e. can I connect a terminal block to enable me to connect more lights. It's just that a lot of transformers say "3 pairs output...

    Cabinet lights

    1. Is it possible to use standard halogen downlights in a kitchen cabinet or do they have to be proper cabinet lights? 2. I have a socket spur on top of a wall cabinet which I was going to use to power cabinet lights. How can I wire from that so I can swicth the lights on at a more convenient...

    Joining 6mm cable

Is it safe to join two lengths of 6mm cable to avoid having to start new wiring from the CU (it currently goes to one position and I need to move it but the existing cable isn't long enough). What is the best method of joining the cable?

    Dimmer - 2 gang

If a 2 gang dimmer shows as rated at 400va does this mean that each gang is 400va, therefore could I power up to 400 watts of lighting per gang?

    Dimmer switch query

I currently have a 2 gang switch for two sets of lighting in my kitchen/diner. I intend to have a low voltage lighting track which states is not dimmable, and another 4 spot mains halogen light which is dimmable. The two arrangements suit me but my question is do I have to have two separate...

    Cable rating & route

I have a double oven rated at 5kw and a ceramic hob at 5.8kw. I intended to run a 6mm cable from a 32A MCB to a CCU. From this CCU a 6mm cable to the oven. Then a 6mm cable from the oven, along the wall behind the base units (just below worktop) to another CCU in an adjacent cupboard to the hob...

    Ceramic hob position

Two questions: 1. Is there a minimum distance that an electric (ceramic) hob needs to be from a sink. 2. The cable run required to the hob position is about 11 metres from the CU. Does this have a bearing on what size cable I need to use and MCB. Not sure yet of the rating of the hob...

    Cable runs

I have to put in a new kitchen ring main. Can I run the cables horizontally from socket to socket in the are of the kitchen units. These runs will be buried then tiled over so most of the horizontal run will be between the wall units and the base units?

    Conduit or not?

I hear conflicting reports about whether you should bury cable in the wall using conduit or just use cable clips and plaster straight over it. Can somebody please advise because it would be easier to just use cable clips.

    Junction box spurs

I've noticed what seems to be the main circuit cable (2.5 T&E) with a branch feeding a junction box. This then feeds a spur socket. If this is correct does it then mean I can branch off the main cable, then take branches of the branch (hope this makes sense)?

    3 cables in one socket???

I have a double socket with three cables into it. I have done a continuity test on all three and it doesn't seem that the socket is on a ring. What is the best way for me to find out what the cables supply etc. There are no other sockets nearby that I can see.

    Hob ignition and cooker hood

    1. Is it safe to plug the gas hob (for the ignition) straight into a normal socket or does it need to be a FCU 2. The same question again but for a cooker hood.

Light circuits - seemed to be wired together

I noticed when I switched off the upstairs light circuit (MCB) the garage light was still on (consumer unit is in garage). So I switched this back on and switched the downstairs light circuit off and the garage light was still on. On further investigation the downstairs curcuit will only switch...

Worcester 24i won't fire up first time

I have a Worcester 24i combi boiler and when I try to turn on the hot water or central heating, when the boiler is cold, the pump comes on but the boiler doesn't ignite. If I then turn it off (hot tap or the boiler CH) and try again it normally works. Would a service clear it? Can anybody...
