    Downlighters and insulation in loft.

Just finished my loft which has over 50 down lights in both fire-rated and non. I used plasterboard boxes that were roughly 400mm x 200mm x 100mm. Time consuming to make but a lot cheaper than the ones that you can buy and they have a similar volume of cooling air space. I then ran the 170mm...

Loft insulation - what to do about some cables?

I'll cut a nice channel in the 170mm and leave the cable on top of the 100mm and joists, possibly on a plasterboard strip. I'm happy to forgo a small amount of insulation for peace of mind. It's above the utility room which has no radiator in anyway so there's little actual heat loss. Thanks...

Loft insulation - what to do about some cables?

It's a ring circuit with nine sockets on 2.5mm2 T&E cable with 32A RCBO protection. With the cable de-rated by 50% due to the insulation, it can only carry 13.5A which is rather a lot less than the protection. It sounds like I need to remove the additional insulation from the area around...

Loft insulation - what to do about some cables?

Thanks for this. I recently replaced all the insulation in my loft with 100mm + 170mm. Unfortunately, in this instance, it is a bungalow so there are loads of all sort of cables, lighting and socket, around. I managed with only three runs buried in insulation not counting those that ran up...

    GU10 vs Low Voltage?

Bought a load of 120 degree spread ones over the summer as a way of reducing the cost of my 50 odd downlights. Very pleased with the light output but I've started experiencing bulb failures which is a worry given the cost and their supposed lifetime.

Loft insulation - top up to joist top or run across them?

What condition is the 50mm in? Our loft was in a similar state however the insulation down was very dirty and a bit patchy. Given the really cheap deals on insulation around at the moment, I just pulled the old stuff up and put down 100mm + 170mm at right angles. Filthy, time consuming job...

    Kitchen lighting and notification

Thanks for the advice there. I was thinking more along the following that I could increase the hole size and replace all six...

    Kitchen lighting and notification

First time poster here. From reading lots of stuff on here I'd like to ensure that I understand the notification requirements for kitchen lighting. I have six ELV downlights in the kitchen which I would like to replace with either ELV LEDs or 240v replacements (either LEDs or CFLs). Am...
