    Concrete Fence Post Replacement

Can’t you remove a brick length each side of the post, remove and replace the post, then repair the wall? Mixing mortar is easy enough. The tools you will need don’t cost much.

    Wonky fence

I can’t answer your questions. I’ll find out, a few minutes digging should suffice. Yes this would be a solution. A winch and rope would shift one once dug round. It looks like this might be fixable, albeit hard work. Probably best wait for the neighbour to croak, he’s old, and a reasonable...

    Wonky fence

Thank you. I’ve discovered that removing the posts from the holes would not be so hard, but they are too heavy to carry away. Oh well.

    Greenhouse footing question

I’ve dug the footings for my 10 by 6 foot aluminium and glass greenhouse. They are for a 6” deep concrete foundation around the perimeter i.e. not a slab. Anyway, I have countless buckets of flints from my garden, many of them are 2 to 4 inches across, and I want to get rid of them. Can I pour...

    Wonky fence

A few years ago I was bullied by a neighbour into sharing the cost of a new fence on our boundary at the bottom of my garden. He and his family had decided what they wanted and who would do the work, and then presented me with a fait accompli. We needed a new fence, the old wooden posts were...

    Laser level for DIY

Thanks. Well today I marked out two adjacent sides, using homemade profile boards, bricklines and a large square from Toolstation. I measured the diagonal, and it differed from the calculated value by 8 mm, 3770 mm calculated and 3778 mm measured, so I count that a success. Measuring lengths...

    Is damp usually condensation?

Not equally. When my car fogs up inside, I see no sign of condensation outside. Condensation will occur outside on cold surfaces when air saturated with moisture meets a colder surface but it needs the right weather conditions. I haven’t seen that since winter. Inside a house, the occupants will...

    Is damp usually condensation?

The biggest cause is the occupants breathing and cold walls. You only have to see how quickly an unventilated car fogs up in winter when someone is inside.

    Laser level for DIY

Thanks all. To mark out the footing I will use a line and square, plus a straight 2.4 m long piece of timber. The brickwork has to be more precise, so I’ll do it in stages, I’m in no hurry.

    Laser level for DIY

Damn! I could level it using my ball head tripod but that’s too complex. There are also laser squares with built in spirit levels, but visibility would be poor to useless.

    Laser level for DIY

Ah okay, I should have been clearer, I need to mark out two lines at right angles, preferably 10 by 6 feet long.

    Laser level for DIY

I want to mark out footings, and a rectangular two brick high wall, for a greenhouse. The bricks need to be laid accurately. I wondered about using a laser level, and from the looks of things ones on Amazon provide better value than Screwfix et al. I have loads of rechargeable AA batteries. I...

    Greenhouse base

It’s a good idea, square planed timber is a similar price, and the piece I picked up has a flat edge.

    Greenhouse base

The brick wall will act as a raised bed with a path in the middle level with the top of the wall, so no need to step over it.

    Greenhouse base

Yours has the steel base which adds rigidity, mine doesn’t, I could get one, but it costs £120 i.e. the same as concrete plus mixer hire . And then there’s the cost of paving stones. My garden is sloping, about a 4” drop over 10 feet, so concrete will let me get a level, okay not really...

Any idea what these vents are for please?

Humidity naturally increases when people are inside for many hours a day. The damp then condenses on cold walls. Wet laundry and bathrooms make it worse.

    Greenhouse base

Thanks. I will hire a mixer. I bought a 2.4 meter length of planed wood and surprisingly it was flat along one side. Unfortunately I cannot get longer pieces in the car. I need the wall to be square to a few mm ! This will be fun … Very kind of Woody to offer. Tea and biscuits will be...

    Is damp usually condensation?

Damp due to condensation often forms behind an object such as a TV because the airflow is reduced, and it may be cooler.

    Is damp usually condensation?

I had black mould in a couple of places inside the house, always a top corner, always an outside wall. One wall was damp. I also had condensation at the base of each window in the morning. If you spend time in your house, the air inside will get saturated, and may condense on cold walls. Perhaps...
