it does have a modulating gas valve though How can I test the plate heat exchanger to make sure it is the fault?

Just been reading a few posts, basically I have a combi and the hot water goes hot then after say 20 seconds it gets cooler and runs cold, then runs hot again and carries on this way. I have heard it could be a number of issues, ie plate heat exchanger blocked/dirty, DHW sensor faulty...
