Checked the temp t/stat today and it does work however there is lots of popping and banging going on before it gets any where near cutting in. Everything seems to be working OK but for the noise. What could it be?

I have a hot water cylinder.

It drips out more when the heating is on. I get the occasional drip when the heating. This seems to suggest that the level isn't getting much higher when off.
