Under Floor Insulation Project - Completed

I didn't come across that when I did my research and spoke to Celotex. The key air flow issue seems to be to keep the flow under the PIR, so the sub-floor area is dry and well ventilated.

Under Floor Insulation Project - Completed

Yes, the room now holds the heat when it is warmed up. Blocking the chimney has obviously also helped with retaining the heat but the combination of the two has finally made the room habitable! The joists were 100m deep, so if you used 100m PIR you'd have to use another method to hold the...

    Loft roof construction

Thanks for this. I did think about drilling a hole....I think I'll do that. The plans for the work are on the Council website, so I'll have a look there. I didn't think of that. Good tip - thanks!

Under Floor Insulation Project - Completed

Yes....mineral wool in the smallish gaps between the joist and the wall would have been much easier to fit in. Keeping the PIR (or expandable foam) in that space was a challenge because I couldn't knock a batten in along the bottom of the joist, facing the wall. There just wasn't room...

Under Floor Insulation Project - Completed

Thanks. I've also got the new fire being fitted in a few weeks' time, which will mean the chimney flue is blocked, which should also help. Hopefully the combination of the insulation, new fire, new radiators and new carpet will make the room warm. My next job is to insulate the attic room...

    Loft roof construction

Hi all, Hopefully someone can help me with this. I have a 1930's house, which has an attic room (it's barely useable given the ceiling height!), which has a load of low level cupboards built in to the eaves. It's a very cold room, so I'd like to insulate it. I've just had a look at the...

Under Floor Insulation Project - Completed

Hi all, I recently installed PIR insulation under the floorboards in my lounge. Hopefully some of the details here might help someone, given there aren't many tradesmen who offer this service (given the time involved, I can see why!). The house is 1930's with a suspended floor and it's about...

    Floorboards run under hearth?

Thanks Lower.....I read your response and looked again and I think you are right. If I look from the side, I can see that the hearth tiles stick out past the joist......if I then look at the original picture, it seems like the boards go up to the joists (at least)......so I can see there's 10cm...

    Floorboards run under hearth?

Hi all, I'm currently in the process of putting in under-floor insulation and have pulled up a number of the original floor boards to open up the space. There are two areas which are proving to be tricky. The first is where the boards meet the fireplace hearth. When I try and lift the board...

Old BT box that can be removed?

Hi all, I'm decorating our lounge and have come across these two boxes on the wall. One of them is the Virgin cable for the TV and router and the other one looks like an old BT box (the code on the box suggests it is BT). We don't use the BT box, so I was going to rip it out....but what has...

    Expansion vessel location

    I think it's a Greenstar 24i Junior.

    Expansion vessel location

I think it's a Greenstar 24i Junior. He said the EV needed replacing. It looks like an 8l EV, which seems to be about £50....so charging £400 is a decent bit of work!

    Expansion vessel location

Ha! Yes.....I Iook at the GSR every year before he does the work. He doesn't always fill me with confidence but a couple of times he has fixed issues other plumbers have failed to sort out.....so I still get him back :) It definitely needs painting or boxing in.

    Expansion vessel location

He is a gas qualified engineer....I check his details every year :). Yes.....aesthetically it isn't great.....it sounds like a box will help. Thanks for the info.

    Expansion vessel location

His first idea was to place it on the work surface ! I think I will box it in, so it's less conspicuous. It's a Worcester-Bosch boiler and he said taking replacing the internal EV would take much longer and this was the more cost effective option.

    Expansion vessel location

My boiler engineer serviced my boiler yesterday and said that the expansion vessel needed replacing. He ended up placing it on the cupboards above the boiler....which looks like an odd place to my untrained eye! I have a couple of questions: - does the vessel get warm? It is sitting on a...

What is this box? Something to do with telephone, cable?

I'm not sure. I've got a voltage detector, which gives a positive reading.

What is this box? Something to do with telephone, cable?

Thanks RG. The cable disappears behind the wall on the landing, so it may take a bit of time/luck to track down where it leads to.....

What is this box? Something to do with telephone, cable?

Thanks RandomGrinch.....I wouldn't have guessed that in a million years! I suppose they are usually linked to the main house alarm? Looking at the loose wiring, do you know if this unit is still live and active?

What is this box? Something to do with telephone, cable?

Hi all, I've just started redecorating a room in my new house and have come across this box on the wall, above the skirting board. I think it's to do with a telephone wire but does anyone know exactly what it is? It has two red "buttons" on the right hand side and a key that fits in the...
