Tips for painting double glazed wooden frames exterior and interior

Thanks for the response, I will post a pic of the rotten soffit tomorrow, I think the reason its gone bad is that either the down pipe (which is directly underneath) is blocked or that the gutter is badly fitted and spilling over, or a combination of both. I think the challenge with the soffit...

Tips for painting double glazed wooden frames exterior and interior

Hi All, my house was built in 1989 and was installed with double-glazed wooden framed windows. Over the years, the outside of the windows has been painted several times with gloss white and the end result after a few years is that the paint cracks, bubbles, lifts off and needs doing again...

    Sealing toilet cistern inlet pipe

I need some advise on how to seal the water inlet connection to a toilet cistern as I have a slight weep from the joint. Whats happened is that I have replaced the syphon and also the float valve together with a new rubber donut for the close fitting cistern. Everything has gone back together...

Leak in loft with adjoining house how to fix and who is responsible

I have a 3 bed semi (2 stories) which is attached to a 3 stories house. The houses were built around 1986 as part of a small housing estate. I've had a suspicion that there was a leak for a number of years as the ceiling in the spare room showed signs of rain damage, but when I went into the...

    Painting over Barrentine Protective Treatment

Its been a couple of weeks since the Barrentine was applied, seems like the Ronseal shed paint wont stick at all, which isn't a surprise now that I realize the Barrentine is resin based and waterproof whereas the Ronseal shed paint is water based. Maybe I need to apply a primer or undercoat so...

    Painting over Barrentine Protective Treatment

I'm refurbishing my garden shed and since the barge boards were rotten, I decided to replace them with new pieces of timber. Since I had half a 5l tin of clear Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment left over from another project, I thought it would be a good idea to use this to protect the new...

Self tapping screw size for electriQ cooker hood

Hi All, I'm trying to repair my electriQ cooker hood as the 2 plastic latch mechanisms holding the door in place are broken. My plan is to use 2 two small tower bolts, one on either end, when the bolts are retracted, the door can be opened and filter cleaned. The tower bolts will be secured...

Front door woodstain or coloured varnish

Thanks for the info, I ended up using Ronseal Quick Drying Wood Stain in Deep Mahogany color, which seems to match the previous stain exactly.

Front door woodstain or coloured varnish

Hi All, I want to repaint my front door which is tatty and currently painted with some kind of wood stain or colored varnish, not sure which but I suspect is colored varnish, see pics below. Does anyone have an idea whether this is colored varnish or wood stain? The next issue is establishing...

    Installing a 10x6 workshop shed

Shed is T&G construction and the 3 glass windows are north facing, so not much help with heating from the sun. Good idea about the tube style electric heaters to keep a low level of heat in. Hopefully one or two of these will be sufficient to keep the damp out and bikes dry.

    Installing a 10x6 workshop shed

Agreed, damp is the biggest problem, other than adding a couple of vents either end to help with air flow, are there any other ways of minimizing damp?

    Installing a 10x6 workshop shed

Good point about the gutters, I will add them to the list of work. My reasoning for adding insulation was mainly because I might do some work in there with an electric fan on to keep warm. The idea being that the shed would warm up fairly rapidly. I accept that once switched off the heat would...

    Installing a 10x6 workshop shed

Hi All, I've recently bought a 10x6 T&G workshop shed which needs assembling on to a new concrete base. When assembled, the shed will have the back and side close to the boundary fence, so I want to make sure its preserved as much as much as possible. The shed was sold by Tiger sheds and has...

Draining down Rads to fit new 3 way Motor Valve

All sorted now, fitted new isolation valve in place of the old one, threads were the same so just screwed on. Had some issues with air locks which caused the boiler to lock out from overheating. Needed to drain water from 5 downstairs radiators using the stopcock. Despite attaching a hose to...

Draining down Rads to fit new 3 way Motor Valve

The isolation valve is in the loft supplying the header tank and float valve, I undid the compression joint between the isolation valve and float valve to check the flow, and there was no flow regardless of which way I turned the 'flat', so it looks like the isolation valve is stuck closed...

Draining down Rads to fit new 3 way Motor Valve

It wasn't a gate valve with the red handle, it was in-line type where a flat bladed screwdriver is needed to turn it on/off. Guess I must have broken something internally, luckily in the shut position. I was worried the new isolator wouldn't fit as the threads might be different, but I think it...

Draining down Rads to fit new 3 way Motor Valve

All done, well almost done, I isolated the header tank, cleaned the tank, drained the system and then I swapped out the 3 way valve complete with wiring. The header tank was completely full of muck, luckily the exit hole was on the side so I don't think too much could get into the system. When...
